John waited for the Headmaster to arrive. Boy was he nervous! After TWO LONG YEARS of persuading, he had finally convinced his Dad to let him go to Hogwarts, like any other normal wizard or witch.
He understood his father’s concerns about his safety- he was the son of the Minister of Magic, after all, but nobody at school needed to know that. And after all, Professor Dumbledore was one of the wisest and most powerful wizards in the world.
He’d be safe there. And happy, finally away from those crabby private instructors he had. They made it practically impossible for him to slack off in any way (though that was probably the point of it) and he was breaking under all the focused pressure.
So his father had finally allowed him to attend Hogwarts, school of witchcraft and wizardry.
“Hello, John. I see you’ve grown taller.” Dumbledore’s ever-calm voice drifted from the top of the room, as he appeared out of… nowhere.
“Hi!” John smiled, giving a friendly wave. Dumbledore’s eyes twinkled at this display of outright casualness. He had always hated stuffy meetings, and after a rather boring discussion with the Minister of Magic involving his son, he was glad for the change of environment.
“Everything’s been sorted out, John. All you have to do now is to try on the sorting hat, and you’ll join your housemates in the dormitories and start attending lessons like everyone else. Your private tutors should have covered everything you’ve needed to know until Year 4… so studying shouldn’t be a problem for you right now.” Dumbledore said, stroking his beard thoughtfully.
John practically glowed with self-satisfaction. At least those lessons had paid off somehow.
“Oh- and you’ll need to choose an extra-curriculum activity. I’d recommend the Baking Club for you, they make marvellous Pumpkin pies and Fizzle Cupcakes-”
“THANK YOU SIR BUT I’D RATHER NOT.” John said loudly. He couldn’t help it. He had enough of his Dad’s baking shenanigans at home; he wasn’t going to touch a single baked good here at Hogwarts.
“… Alright then,” The elder wizard said, an amused smile on his face. He then reached for a ragged old hat on a corner shelf, and walked up to John, placing it carefully on his head.
He had heard about this, John thought. This hat was supposed to talk to him about which house he was more suited for-
“Quite right, you are.” John jumped in surprise at the scratchy voice that sounded in his mind.
“Uh… hello.”
“Greetings, child. A little late for you sorting now, aren’t you?” It said, shaking slightly while chortling.
John rolled his eyes. “Let’s just get started!”
“Hm… impatient. But very well then. Let’s look at your qualities. I see… loyalty, courage and a lot of love. But also a bright spirit, carefree and loving. Hufflepuff should be suited to you.”
John gasped. “Aw, man! I don’t wanna be in Hufflepuff!”
“Don’t judge them by what people think, child. They’re stronger than you think!”
“… I still don’t want to be in Hufflepuff.” John said, crossing his arms. His decision was final.
“A decisive mind. It could help you in making decisions, but also contributes to your stubbornness.”
John thought about his permanent, lasting hate of Betty Crocker.
“But very well then, it’s as you wish. Gryffindor it is!”
There was a moment of silence. Then Professor Dumbledore removed the hat from John’s head, and gave him a smile.
“Right then, John. Off to the Gryffindor common room you go. Adam will show you the way.”
And right on cue, a brunette teenager entered the office, a prefect badge attached to his blazer. A Gryffindor, judging from the maroon sweater and tie. He had a blank expression on his face, and he didn’t really look like the type to crack jokes.
“You called, Headmaster?”
“Ah, right on time, Mister Wilson. Please take John Egbert here to the Gryffindor common room. He won’t be attending lessons today, but he’ll start tomorrow. I trust you to introduce him properly to the rest of the Gryffindors.”
Adam Wilson turned to look at John. “Interesting. Welcome to Hogwarts, Egbert.”
“T-thanks!” John said, giving a shy smile. Adam surprisingly gave a warm smile back, and politely held the door open until John had walked through.
Off to the common room it was.
